How Vinod Gupta Found Professional Success With His Own Company

Having been born in 1946, Vinod Gupta says that he grew up in a very poor city in India that lacked so much as running water, electricity, and roads among other things. However, he was able to attend college and went to I.I.T. Kharagpur where he got a degree in agricultural engineering in 1967. He then moved to the US and became a student at the University of Nebraska. He earned both his master’s in agricultural engineering there and later an MBA.
His first job was at Commodore Corporation. His job was to do market research analysis for this company which built mobile homes. He was tasked with making a list of all of the mobile home dealers in America which he decided to create by ordering 4,800 Yellow Pages phone books (all free). He took all of these home and was told that Commodore might buy the list he compiled depending on the cost.
After finishing this list, Vinod Gupta finished his list and Commodore offered to either pay $9000 and receive exclusive rights to his list or he could give it to the company for free and he would be able to sell this list to whoever he wanted. He decided to take the later option and formed his own company, Business Research Services & American Business Lists which went on to have phenomenal success. Vinod Gupta is now the managing general partner of another firm, Everest Group in Omaha, Nebraska.
